So why doesn't everybody just go out and buy the recommended books, study, and then take the exam?

Costs, laziness, and fear.  You would have to go and buy every textbook or reference, which could be $100+ per book.  Then you would have to comb through the material of each book and bounce it against the content guide, ensuring you are studying the correct material.  Besides, we all would much rather have the quick and easy way to do it....

In fact, this is what InstantCert essentially does:  researches the different recommended textbooks and other books and, based on the exam's content outline, provides detailed notes of what they think will be covered on the exam and nothing more.  That's why their study guides are generally very accurate.  iStudySmart uses a similar method, but they go a few steps further and make YOU go through the textbook and take the notes.  Their courses are designed to walk you though it so that you're not completely on your own.  I highly recommend these two sources to help you expedite your studies.
What are the different ways you can study for the college credit exams?

Buy the appropriate textbook or study guides that would cover a college course in that subject

You can also just try to 'wing it'.  Not usually recommended unless you feel you already know the material.  An example of 'knowing the material' would be if you already speak Spanish and want some college credits for it.  Remember, if you fail, you have to wait 6 months to retake that exam (and pay the test fee again).
These are the most frequently asked questions about my degree plan.  I held nothing back and pulled no punches. I wanted other people to know exactly what I went through. You have all of the research that I came across.  That's why it may seem that there is a lot of information on this site.  Read it all the way through or skip around to parts that you need the most.  However, some questions still kept coming up, so I'll try to answer them the best below....
Do I have to attend one of the "Big 3" distance learning colleges to use the 'BS in 6 months' formula?

NO!
The 'Big 3' schools, Excelsior, COSC, and TESC, were mentioned heavily because they offer the greatest flexibility.  You can use any regionally accredited school you want that accepts credit-by-examination.  Note that most other schools have limits as to how much total transferable credit will be accepted.  Usually you can 'test out' of your lower level requirements and use the in-class time to concentrate on the upper level requirements.  The dantes catalog specializes in regionally accredited distance learning schools with low residency requirements.
My school won't accept xxxxxx exam or xxxxxx credits in transfer......

Each school sets their own policies regarding what they will or will not accept when enrolling in their school.  Sorry, there's nothing I can do.

By the way, I will emphasize the importance of having an official review done.  This is accomplished by enrolling in the school and requesting one from the admissions dept.  Make sure you send in all official transcripts from any school or college-related coursework you've previously taken.
Is it really possible to complete a 4-year degree in under 1 year?

This really depends on the person.  The whole BS in 6 months phrase was more of a concept of shortening your time to complete a degree.  I showed you how to do this in the simpliest, most efficient manner I knew at the time.  You can see my proof here

How many exams did you test out of with InstantCert?

Over 30.
I successfully tested out of the following exams:
Great website.  Your story is very inspiring.

Thank you.  I get this a lot.  Hopefully, I will set up a testimonials page one day.  But most of the proof is available right here on the website.
If your question wasn't answered here, it may be worth your while to go through the degree plan

Still haven't answered your question?  Go to the contact us page and I'll see what I can do.
Will my school accept xxxxxx credits?

Again, you must contact the school's acacemic counselors or admissions department to get that question answered.  You can also check their official degree catalogs/publications for answers
I am xx years old.  Can I still do this?

I don't see why not.  If you are under 18, you may have to have your parent/guardian's permission to attend the school.  Contact the school's admissions department for their policies concerning this.

Even if they won't admit you, you can start taking CLEPs, DSSTs, etc at any age.  This would especially be useful for high schoolers who what to get a head start on college.  Once you turn 18, you can then enroll and request that an official transcript be sent to the school(s) of your choice.
Can I link to your website?

Absolutely!  I would prefer that your website be of an educational or business related nature.  Let me know and I will try to link back to you as soon as possible.
